I did this while being unemployed, having been made redundant at the beginning of 2020 but with a global pandemic thrown in, finding work, even key work, was harder than ever before. Not one for sitting on my laurels, I educated myself with fresh skills that I felt could open doors to me later. Getting my head around the change in working style was quite difficult as it’s very different from my creative background in marketing, but at the end of my qualification with TEFL.org, I found a recruitment company who were looking for teachers ASAP so I sent them my resume in the hopes of finding work. It’s very well known here in Korea so I’m pleased I landed the job, especially landing one here in Seoul itself. My location offers classes Monday to Friday, which is very rare for academy work as many school students in South Korea also attend academies on weekends. I’m sure I will need to support them on weekends during exam seasons, but it’s quite nice to know I have some allocated time in my schedule to relax or even complete my studies. The work is quite late here, but that’s to be expected. Academy studies begin after state school has ended, meaning I teach between 4 pm and 10 pm Monday to Friday. South Korea has a lot to offer visitors, especially in Seoul, so I hope I can share this with other people who may want to escape but can’t just yet, either because of money, working situation or simply COVID limitations. These were much harder to construct as the sentences needed to work with the database of options yet still needed to not only make sense, but also have the bot’s decided language and quirks. This was no mean feat. Trying to make tweets into something coherent and only having a title of the database category as the option was really difficult to get my head around, For example, “The MV is filmed in #setting.a#”. Even proofreading was hard as the database inputs would really throw you off the flow of the copy, nonetheless I, of course, created plenty of options to ensure there would be a variety in the tweets posted. After a few days of testing, it became apparent even more variations were needed and some additional application for the channel’s personality. At the very beginning, it was evident that to show how wild KPOP concepts can really be, there needed to be a few messages or tweets that would hark back to spam email subject designs, Personal Assistant reminders, or those pesky errors or restart messages we frequently saw when using computers. This was the easiest part of the copywriting as it required no specific structure, just KPOP puns. After publishing, it became apparent from some DMs Emily received that most Twitter Bots don’t normally have this built-in and it was refreshing to see. Of course, we were both excited to have potentially created something new in Bot behaviour.
